Chemical peeling is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin. There are many types of chemical agents which treat a myriad of dermatologic issues from acne to photodamage, pigment and wrinkles. Peels range from mild salon-type procedures with no “down-time” and no true peeling to much more deeply penetrating with significant, but temporary, inflammation and peeling.
Our office provides trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and Jessner’s solution peels. These are used to treat pigmentation of the skin in the form of photodamage (sun spots, “age spots”, “liver spots”), blotchiness, mild to moderate wrinkles & fine lines, skin that is dull in texture and color, and mild acne scarring. Patients with actinic keratoses or precancers may also benefit from these peels, though it is our practice to treat actinic keratoses with other therapies. TCA & Jessner’s peels are not lunchtime procedures. In order to treat discoloration, wrinkles, and textural changes of the skin, it is necessary to use an agent of sufficient strength and achieve a peel of adequate depth.
